MEDIA RELEASE

3rd March 2025

The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia, Queensland Northern Territory (IPWEA-QNT) advises that the upcoming South-East Queensland/South-West Queensland (SEQ/SWQ) Branch Conference has been postponed due to the imminent threat posed by Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred has strengthened to category 2 and is expected to turn westwards towards the SEQ coast on Tuesday. High winds and heavy intense rainfall is forecast for SEQ from Wednesday.

The conference was originally scheduled to take place on 4-5 March 2025 at The Empire Theatre in Toowoomba. The decision to postpone has been made in consideration of the following factors:

1. Many delegates attending the conference work in local government and are required to focus on cyclone preparation and response activities for their local communities.

2. Delegates travel from the venue on Wednesday afternoon may be significantly impacted by the effects of the cyclone, including high winds, heavy rainfall, and potential flooding.

Brett Wright – Chief Executive Officer at IPWEA-QNT, stated:

“The safety and well-being of our members, partners, and stakeholders is our highest priority. With the forecasted impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, we believe postponing the conference is the most responsible course of action. We also acknowledge the critical role that many of our attendees play in disaster preparedness and response, and we appreciate everyone’s understanding during this challenging time.”

IPWEA-QNT is actively working with The Empire Theatre to confirm a new date for the conference. Further updates will be provided as soon as details are finalised.

For any inquiries regarding the postponement, please contact the IPWEA-QNT events team by email at events@ipweaq.com or by phone on 07 3632 6800

We extend our thoughts to all communities affected by the cyclone and urge everyone to follow official weather and emergency service updates for the latest information and safety advice.

ENDS.
